Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

Change over time

The change between Census 2011 and Census 2021 in the number of residents born in the UK has varied across wards in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Whilst some wards have seen notable increases, others have seen notable falls. The wards with the biggest increase – Trumpington (4,140) – and the biggest falls – Coleridge (-710) are both located in Cambridge. Although numbers have increased in many wards, across all but 6 wards the proportion of UK born residents has fallen. The biggest falls of more than 15 percentage points are in Trumpington and Coleridge. Alconbury, Great Staughton, Kimbolton and Buckden (all in Huntingdonshire), March West & Benwick (Fenland), and Gamlingay (South Cambridgeshire) are the 6 wards where the proportion of UK born residents has increased.

Numbers of EU born residents are little changed or higher at Census 2021 compared to Census 2011. The most notable rises of more than 1,000 are seen in Trumpington (Cambridge), Coleridge (Cambridge), Central (Peterborough), Wisbech South (Fenland), East (Peterborough). Stanground South (Peterborough), Bretton (Peterborough), and Huntingdon North (Huntingdonshire). Central ward in Peterborough has the highest number of EU born residents, with 3,380 residents.

Across all wards in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough numbers of residents born in the rest of Europe (non EU) have either been little changed or have increased between Census 2011 and Census 2021. King’s Hedges (Cambridge) has seen the largest increase of just over 300 residents. Coleridge (Cambridge), Cambourne (South Cambridgeshire), Abbey (Cambridge), Queen Edith’s (Cambridge), and Central (Peterborough) have all seen increases of more than 100. King’s Hedges has the highest number of residents born in the rest of Europe, with 440 residents.

Across all wards in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough numbers of residents born in the Middle East and Asia have either been little changed or have increased between Census 2011 and Census 2021. Trumpington (Cambridge), Queen Edith’s (Cambridge), Castle (Cambridge), Central (Peterborough), Coleridge (Cambridge), Romsey (Cambridge), Cambourne (South Cambridgeshire) and Park (Peterborough), have all seen increases of more than 500, with Trumpington seeing the highest increase, of 1,420. With 2,890 residents Central (Peterborough) has the highest number of residents born in the Middle East and Asia.

Most wards across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have seen at least a small increase in the number of residents born in Africa. The largest increases, of more than 200, have been in Trumpington, Cambridge, and in Hargate and Hempsted, Stanground South, and Hampton Vale, all urban wards of Peterborough.

Whilst some wards have seen notable increases, others have seen notable falls. Wards with the largest increases, of between 100 and 300, are found in Cambridge, including Trumpington, Castle, Queen Edith’s and Market, and some of the urban wards of Peterborough, including Hargate and Hempsted, and Central. Wards with the biggest falls in number of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean are largely within East Cambridgeshire, including Ely North (-160), Fordham and Isleham (-80), and Littleport (-70), and Huntingdonshire, including Alconbury (-80) and Brampton and Kimbolton (both -50).

There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in Antarctica and Oceania, including Australasia, and Other.

Proportion of population

The proportion of the population born outside the UK ranges between 51.4% in Central ward in Peterborough and 4.9% in Gamlingay ward in South Cambridgeshire. Central ward in Peterborough is the only ward where more than half of the population is born outside the UK. Proportions are highest in some of the urban wards of Peterborough and Cambridge, and some of the wards in Wisbech in Fenland (32.8% Wisbech Riverside, 32.2% Wisbech North and 31.6% Wisbech South).

Meanwhile, some of the lowest proportions are found in the more rural wards of Fenland, Peterborough, East Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire, as well as in the Whittlesey wards of Fenland.

Cambridgeshire

The change between Census 2011 and Census 2021 in the number of residents born in the UK has varied across wards in Cambridgeshire. Whilst some wards have seen notable increases, others have seen notable falls. Across all but 6 wards, the proportion of UK born residents has fallen between Census 2011 and Census 2021. The wards with the biggest increase – Trumpington (4,140) – and the biggest falls – Coleridge (-710) are both located in Cambridge. Although numbers have increased in many wards, across all but 6 wards the proportion of UK born residents has fallen, with the biggest falls of more than 15% seen in Trumpington and Coleridge.

Proportions are highest in some of the urban wards of Cambridge, as well as some of the wards in Wisbech in Fenland (32.8% Wisbech Riverside, 32.2% Wisbech North and 31.6% Wisbech South). Meanwhile, some of the lowest proportions are found in the more rural wards of East Cambridgeshire, Fenland, Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire, as well as in the Whittlesey wards of Fenland.

Peterborough

Change over time

The change between Census 2011 and Census 2021 in the number of residents born in the UK has varied across wards in Peterborough. Stanground South, Hargate and Hempsted, Hampton Vale, Eye, Thorney and Newborough, and Central have all seen increases of more than 1,000 residents. Meanwhile, the wards Bretton, Orton Longueville, Wittering and Werrington, have all seen falls of more than 400. The proportion of UK born residents has fallen across all wards, and in many by more than 10 percentage points since Census 2011, including Stanground South, Hargate and Hempsted, Hampton Vale, Paston and Walton, Bretton, and Orton Longueville.

While Barnack, Glinton and Caston, and Wittering wards have seen little change in the numbers of EU born residents, in all other wards numbers have increased by at least 200, and in most cases by more than 500. In Central, East, Stanground South and Bretton numbers have increased by more than 1,000. The proportion of EU born residents has increased in all wards.

Some wards have seen some more notable increases in the number of residents born in the rest of Europe (non-EU), with the largest increases of between 70 and 110 in Central, Hargate and Hempsted, and Stanground South.

All wards, apart from Wittering, have seen increases in the numbers of residents born in the Middle East and Asia. Increases of more than 400 have been seen in each of Central, Park, Ravensthorpe and East wards. With 2,890 residents, Central has the highest number of residents born in the Middle East and Asia.

All wards, apart from Barnack, have seen increases in the have seen increases in the numbers of residents born in Africa. The largest increases, of more than 200, are in Hargate & Hempsted, Stanground South and Hampton Vale. In all wards, apart from Barnack, residents born in Africa account for a higher proportion of the population in Census 2021 compared to Census 2011. With 600 residents, Central has the highest number of residents born in Africa.

There has generally been little change in the numbers of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean. Hargate and Hempsted, and Central wards are notable for an increase of more than 100 residents between Census 2011 and Census 2021. With 260 residents, Hargate and Hempsted has the highest number of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean.

There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in Antarctica and Oceania, including Australasia, and Other.

Proportion of population

In Peterborough wards, the proportion of residents born outside the UK ranges between 51.4% in Central ward and 6.4% in Glinton and Castor. Central ward is the only ward where more than half of the population is born outside the UK. In all urban wards, more than one-fifth of the population are born outside the UK, with the exceptions of Orton Waterville (18.1%), Gunthorpe (15.7%) and Werrington (12.8%). In all four rural wards less than 10% of the population was born outside the UK.

Cambridge

Change over time

The change between Census 2011 and Census 2021 in the number of residents born in the UK has varied across wards in Cambridge, with many wards seeing these numbers fall. The largest falls were in Coleridge (-710, -10.9%) and Abbey (-560, -7.2%) wards. There were small increases in Market (200) and Petersfield (110) wards, and more notable rises in Queen Edith’s (880) and Castle (960) wards. The most substantial increase was in Trumpington, where there were just over 4 thousand more residents born in the UK at Census 2021 compared to Census 2011. This represents a 123.2% increase. Nevertheless, the proportion of total residents who were born in the UK has fallen across all wards between Census 2011 and Census 2021, by between -0.4 (Newnham) and -15.8 (Coleridge) percentage points. Despite a notable rise in the number of UK born residents in Trumpington, their proportion of total residents has fallen by 15.3 percentage points between Census 2011 and Census 2021.

The largest increases have been seen for residents born in the EU, and for residents born in the Middle East and Asia.

The numbers of residents born in the EU have seen little change in Newnham. For all other wards, numbers have increased by between just over 350 (33.1%) in West Chesterton and almost 1,500 (385.4%) in Trumpington. The proportion of residents born in the EU has increased by between 0.9 percentage points in Newnham and 9.8 percentage points in Coleridge.

The numbers of residents born in the Middle East and Asia have seen little change for Newnham and King’s Hedges wards. For all other wards numbers have increased by between just over 100 in East Chesterton (19.5% increase) and Abbey (19.4% increase) wards and just over 1,400 (422.3%) in Trumpington. The largest increases are in Trumpington, Queen Edith’s and Castle wards. The proportion of residents born in the Middle East and Asia has increased by between -0.4 percentage points in King’s Hedges and 7.2 percentage points in Castle.

Numbers of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean have increased across all wards, except Newnham. Increases range between 30 in Abbey and 300 in Trumpington, with increases of more than 200 in Castle, Queen Edith’s and Market wards.

Numbers of residents born in the rest of Europe (non-EU countries) have also increased. These increases range between -30 in Newnham (the only ward to see a decrease) and 310 in King’s Hedges. The share of the total population of those born in the rest of Europe has increased marginally in all wards, apart from Newnham, where it is little changed.

Numbers of residents born in Africa have increased in some wards, most notably in Trumpington (330) and Queen Edith’s (160). There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in Antarctica and Oceania, including Australasia, and Other.

Proportion of population

Coleridge is the ward with the highest proportion of residents who were born outside the UK at 46.2% of residents, with Castle not far behind, with 45.0% of residents born outside the UK. For most wards the proportion of residents born outside the UK ranges between 40% and 30%. East Chesterton has the lowest proportion of residents born outside the UK at 32.8%.

East Cambridgeshire

Change over time

The change between Census 2011 and Census 2021 in the number of residents born in the UK has varied across wards in East Cambridgeshire, with many wards seeing these numbers fall. The largest falls, of more than 200, were in Ely East, Ely West and Woodditton. The largest increases were in Soham South (800, 17.6%), Littleport (770, 9.8%) and Ely North (400, 11.1%). Despite increases in numbers in some wards, the proportion of residents born in the UK of the total has fallen across all wards, by between -4.8 percentage points in Ely East and -0.4 percentage points in Fordham and Isleham.

The largest increases have been seen for residents born in the EU, rising by between 330 (an 89.4% increase) in Littleport and 10 (an 18.3% increase) in Downham Villages. Increases have been greatest in the market town wards of Ely, Littleport and Soham. The proportion of residents born in the EU has increased in all wards, by between 0.4 percentage points in Downham Villages and 2.9 percentage points in Ely East. Littleport has the highest number of residents born in the EU, at 700.

The numbers of residents born in the Middle East and Asia have increased across all wards, apart from Ely West and Haddenham. Increases range between 50 in Soham North and 10 in Soham North. Ely West has the highest number of residents born in the Middle East and Asia, at 210, followed by Littleport, 180, Bottisham, 170, and Ely East, 170.

Most wards have seen an increase in the number of residents born in Africa, with the largest increases of more than 50 in Littleport, Woodditton and Soham North. Ely West has the highest number of residents born in Africa, at 180.

There have been some increases in the numbers of residents born in the rest of Europe (non-EU), notably in Ely and Soham, and to a lesser extent Littleport. Soham South and Ely East have the highest number of residents born in the rest of Europe, at around 50.

Numbers of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean have fallen marginally in many wards, and most particularly in Ely North, -160, Fordham and Isleham, -80, and Littleport, -70. Numbers have increased slightly in Ely East, 50, and Soham South, 20. Ely West has the highest number of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean, at 230.

There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in Antarctica and Oceania, including Australasia, and Other.

Proportion of population

In East Cambridgeshire, the proportion of residents born outside the UK ranges between 18.9% in Ely East and 6.0% in Downham Villages. Proportions are higher, above 12%, in the market town wards and lower in the more rural wards, between 6% and 12%.

Fenland

Change over time

The change between Census 2011 and Census 2021 in the number of residents born in the UK has varied across wards in Fenland. Numbers have fallen notably in the wards of Wisbech, by more than 100 in Wisbech Riverside, and by more than 200 in each of Wisbech North, Wisbech South and Wisbech Walsoken & Waterlees. In these Wisbech wards, the proportion of residents born in the UK has fallen substantially, by 7 percentage points or more. In other wards numbers of UK born residents have increased notably, including Chatteris North (740), Whittlesey East (690), Parson Drove and Wisbech St Mary (520) and Whittlesey North (500). Despite these notable increases, the proportion of UK born residents has fallen across all wards, except for March West & Benwick, between Census 2011 and Census 2021.

There have been substantial increases in the numbers of residents born in the EU, particularly in Wisbech and Chatteris. The largest increase was in Wisbech South, with 1,110 more residents by Census 2021, meaning that there were 2,500 more EU born residents in Wisbech at Census 2021 compared to Census 2011. In all wards, the proportion of EU born residents has increased.
There have also been some increases in the number of residents born in the rest of Europe (non-EU), especially in Wisbech and Whittlesey, with the largest increase 40 in Wisbech South.

Some wards have seen increases in the numbers of residents born in the Middle East and Asia, including Wisbech South, 60, March East, 50, and Leverington and Wisbech Rural, 40. Wisbech South has the highest number of residents born in the Middle East and Asia, with 150 residents.

Some wards have seen an increase in the number of residents born in Africa, with the largest increase being 40 in March North, followed by a rise of 30 in Whittlesey East and Wisbech Riverside. March North has the highest number of residents born in Africa, at 90.

There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean, the most notable being a rise of 40 to total some 70 residents at Census 2021 in March North.

There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in Antarctica and Oceania, including Australasia, and Other.

Proportion of population

In Fenland, proportions of residents born outside the UK range between 32.8% in Wisbech Riverside and 5.1% in Whittlesey Lattersey. Whilst proportions vary widely between the market town wards, the more rural wards have proportions of residents born outside the UK ranging between 7.4% in Leverington and Wisbech Rural to 5.3% in Elm and Christchurch.

Huntingdonshire

Change over time

The change between Census 2011 and Census 2021 in the number of residents born in the UK has varied across wards in Huntingdonshire. Numbers have fallen by more than 500 in St Neots Eynesbury and St Ives East, and by more than 250 in each of Stilton, Folksworth and Washingley, Huntingdon East, Holywell-cum-Needingworth and St Neots Eatons. In other wards there have been notable increases in the numbers of UK born residents, of more than 500 in Hemingford Grey and Houghton, St Neots Priory Park and Little Paxton and Godmanchester, and of more than 1,500 in Brampton and St Neots East. Despite some substantial increases, the proportion of UK born residents has fallen, or is little changed, across all wards between Census 2011 and Census 2021.

In some wards there have been notable increases in the numbers of residents born in the EU, particularly in Huntingdon Noth (1,010). At Census 2021 there were 2,310 EU born residents. There were also increases of between 200 and 300 in Brampton, Huntingdon East, St Neots Eynesbury, Godmanchester and Hemingford Abbots, The Stukeleys, Yaxley and St Neots East. The proportion of EU born residents is either little changed or higher at Census 2021 compared to Census 2011, especially in Huntingdon North, where it is 6.7 percentage points higher.

There have also been some increases in the number of residents born in the rest of Europe (non-EU), with the largest Increase of 80 in Huntingdon North, meaning that at Census 2021 there were 120 residents born in the rest of Europe in this ward.

Some wards have seen increases in the numbers of residents born in the Middle East and Asia, including Huntingdon North, 180, Brampton, 170, and The Stukeleys, 110. Huntingdon North has the highest number of residents born in the Middle East and Asia, with 690 residents.

Some wards have seen an increase in the number of residents born in Africa, with the largest increases of between 100 and 200 in Huntingdon North, Brampton and Godmanchester and Hemingford Abbots. There have also been notable increases in parts of St Ives and St Neots.

There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean, with some wards, including Godmanchester and Hemingford Abbots, St Neots Priory Park and St Neots East seeing increases of around 50 residents, and some wards seeing decreases of 50 to 80 residents – Kimbolton, Brampton and Alconbury. The highest number of resident born in the Americas and the Caribbean is The Stukeley, with 500 residents.

There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in Antarctica and Oceania, including Australasia, and Other.

Proportion of population

In Huntingdonshire, proportions of residents born outside the UK range between 29.9% in Huntingdon North to 6.4% in Somersham. Many of the more rural wards have lower proportions of their residents born outside the UK, typically below 10%, whilst market town wards have higher proportions of more than 10%, apart from St Neots Priory Park and Little Paxton ward (9.1%) and Ramsey (7.8%).

South Cambridgeshire

Change over time

The change between Census 2011 and Census 2021 in the number of residents born in the UK has varied across wards in South Cambridgeshire. The two new settlement wards of Cambourne and Longstanton have seen the most notable increases, of almost 2,000 each. Caxton and Papworth and Harston and Comberton wards have also seen notable growth of more than 500 residents. Wards where there have been notable falls in numbers of UK born residents include Fen Ditton and Fulbourn (-500), Milton and Waterbeach (-490), Bar Hill (-470) and Sawston (-400). Even in wards where there has been notable growth, the proportion of UK born residents has either fallen or shown little change between Census 2011 and Census 2021.

In some wards there have been notable increases in the numbers of residents born in the EU, particularly in Cambourne (630), Histon and Impington (530), and Longstanton (470). The proportion of EU born residents is either little changed or higher at Census 2021 compared to Census 2011, especially in Bar Hill, where it is 7.9 percentage points higher.

Some wards have seen some more notable increases in the number of residents born in the rest of Europe (non-EU), with the largest increase of 150 in Cambourne, meaning that at Census 2021 there were 210 residents born in the rest of Europe in this ward. Fen Ditton and Fulbourn, and Harston and Comberton have also more notable rises, of more than 50.

Some wards have seen more notable increases in the numbers of residents born in the Middle East and Asia. Increases of more than 250 have been seen in Cambourne, Harston and Comberton, Longstanton and Fen Ditton and Fulbourn. Across all wards the proportion of residents born in the Middle East and Asia is little changed or higher than it was at Census 2011.

Most wards have seen an increase in the number of residents born in Africa, with the largest increases of between 100 and 200 in Cambourne, Longstanton, and Harston and Comberton. Cambourne has the highest number of residents born in Africa, with 460 residents.

There has been a general rise in the numbers of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean, with Longstanton, Cambourne, Milton and Waterbeach, Histon and Impington, and Shelford seeing the biggest rises, of between 50 and 100 residents. Histon and Impington has the highest number of residents born in the Americas and the Caribbean, with 260 residents.

There has been little change in the numbers of residents born in Antarctica and Oceania, including Australasia, and Other.

Proportion of population

In South Cambridgeshire wards, between 26.7%, in Cambourne, and 4.9%, in Gamlingay, of residents are born outside the UK. Wards where there has been significant house building, such as Cambourne and Longstanton, and wards which fringe Cambridge City tend to have higher proportions of residents born outside the UK, generally of above 20%.
