Census 2011

What is the Census?

Every 10 years the Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries out a national census in order to gather information about the population of England and Wales. Topics include age, health, education, ethnicity, language use, work and religion, amongst others. National and local government organisations use this information in a variety of ways, such as allocating funding, planning services, and otherwise understanding local populations.

The 2011 Census took place on 27 March 2011. Our overview and interactive reports across individual themes often include highlights from this data. Further analysis has been used within specific documents within our document library.

More information on the 2011 census can be found at the ONS website.
