Headlines from Q1 2026:

  • Vehicular daily flows on the strategic road network during March 2026 were 4% above pre-COVID (March 2019) levels.
  • Vehicular flows on the local road network during March 2026 were 9% below pre-COVID (February 2020) levels; and show no change compared to this time last year (March 2025).
  • Multi-storey car park usage in Cambridge remains below 2019 levels (-22% overall compared to March 2019). Queen Anne Terrace Car Park usage is closest to pre-COVID (-3%); whereas Park Street usage is furthest below pre-COVID (-52%).
  • Retail footfall in central Cambridge is 12% below pre-COVID levels. All days of the week present as being below the levels seen in March 2019, but Monday and Fridays (-15%) are furthest below. Sunday footfall levels are closest to pre-COVID (-3%).
  • Average Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) concentrations were 32% below the 2017-2019 baseline in March 2026; suggesting that air pollution levels in central Cambridge are still a little way below those seen pre-COVID.

Context: each quarter, the transport sub-section of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Policy & Insight Team publish a slide pack which seeks to summarise how transport and mobility is recovering / has recovered from the impacts of COVID-19.

This includes metrics relating to strategic road usage, local road usage, footfall levels, air quality, car park usage and levels of active travel.
