Headlines from Q2 2026:
- Vehicular daily flows on the strategic road network during June 2026 were 1% above pre-COVID (June 2019) levels.
- Vehicular flows on the local road network during June 2026 were 7% below pre-COVID (June 2019) levels; and are 2% higher than this time last year (June 2025).
- Active travel flows are lower in June 2026 compared to the same month in recent years. It is possible that weather conditions at various points during June 2026 impacted the likelihood of active modes of transport being used.
- Multi-storey car park usage in Cambridge remains below 2019 levels (-23% overall compared to June 2019). Queen Anne Terrace is the only individual facility to see usage surpass pre-COVID (+6%); whereas Grafton East usage is furthest below pre-COVID (-70%).
- Retail footfall in central Cambridge is 10% below pre-COVID levels. All days of the week present as being below the levels seen in June 2019. Sunday footfall levels remain closest to pre-COVID (-1%), while Wednesday (-15%) and Thursday (-16%) are furthest below.
- Average Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) concentrations were 32% below the 2017-2019 baseline in June 2026; suggesting that air pollution levels in central Cambridge are still a little way below those seen pre-COVID.
Context: each quarter, the transport sub-section of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Policy & Insight Team publish a slide pack which seeks to summarise how transport and mobility is recovering / has recovered from the impacts of COVID-19.
This includes metrics relating to strategic road usage, local road usage, footfall levels, air quality, car park usage and levels of active travel.
